Graduate Admissons

Thank you for your interest in applying to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas. Please see our admission requirements below.

General admission requirements

To apply to the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) program you must:

  • Meet standards equivalent to those currently required for admission to the MS or PhD programs in materials science, electrical engineering, chemistry, physics or biology.
  • Application
    Complete the Graduate Application for Admission.
  • GRE Scores
    Upload digital copies of your unofficial GRE scores using the online graduate application.  Advisable minimum GRE revised scores are 154 for verbal, 154 for quantitative and 4 for analytical writing. Send the official scores after admission to avoid processing delays. GRE scores must be no more than 5 years old by date of application. 
  • Narrative
    Provide a narrative statement outlining your background, education, professional goals and interest in the program. If you have a specific interest in one or more MSE faculty member’s research or group, you may indicate it in your narrative.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
    Provide three letters of recommendation from individuals who are able to judge your ability to succeed in the program, including your work ethic and scholastic abilities. Use the electronic request form in the graduate application to submit the letters. For applicants currently in another PhD program who are planning to transfer to MSE at UT Dallas, a letter from the current PhD advisor is strongly encouraged.
  • Transcripts
    Provide digital copies of your unofficial transcripts from all universities attended using the online application. Mail your official documents only after admission, or processing delays may result.
  • Application Fee
    Pay the $50 application fee.
    Exceptions: The application fee is waived if a student has graduated from UT Dallas, or if the student is continuously attending UT Dallas.

Additional requirements for international students

In addition, international students must:

  • Have earned at least the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by their country’s Ministry of Education.
  • Proof of English Proficiency
    Upload digital copies of your unofficial English proficiency test scores using the online graduate application. The University accepts several types of English proficiency tests. Official test scores should be submitted to UT Dallas directly from the testing agency after admission.
  • Diplomas / Degree Certificates
    Provide copies of diplomas or degree certificates.
  • Certified English Translations
    Provide certified translations of non-English documents, including transcripts and degree certificates.  Upload scanned copies with certified English translations by the appropriate academic institution or government agency.
  • Foreign Credential Fee
    Pay the $50 nonrefundable international credential evaluation fee, if applicable. This fee is a one-time evaluation fee. If paid on a previous application, it will be waived on your current application.

*An application is considered complete when all supporting documents, including transcripts, are postmarked on or before the deadline.

Documentation submission deadlines are the same as the application submission deadlines listed above.
PLEASE NOTE: Applications will not be reviewed until all required documents have been submitted.
