General admission requirements
To apply to the Materials Science and Engineering program you must:
a) Meet standards equivalent to those currently required for admission to the PhD or master's degree programs in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics or biology. Two copies of all college/university transcripts or mark sheets must be provided.
b) Complete the Graduate Studies Application.
c) Provide official copies of GRE scores.
d) Provide a narrative statement outlining your background, education, professional goals and interest in the program.
e) Provide three letters of recommendation from individuals who are able to judge your ability to succeed in the program, including your work ethic and scholastic abilities.
f) Pay the $50 application fee.
Additional requirements for international students
In addition foreign students must:
a) Have earned at least the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by their country’s Ministry of Education.
a) Provide official copies of TOEFL scores. The minimum TOEFL score for consideration for admission is 80.
b) Pay the $50 foreign credential fee, if applicable.
c) Pay the $100 nonrefundable international document evaluation fee (for any student who has been educated outside the United States).
d) Provide copies of diplomas or degree certificates.
e) Provide certified translations of non-English documents, including transcripts and degree certificates.
f) Provide a financial affidavit and original bank statements.
Application deadline dates
Application and documentation submission deadlines below are applicable for ALL international and domestic (US Citizen and Resident) applicants.
Completed applications (including all required documentation) must be received by:
- April 15 for Fall admission
- September 1 for Spring admission
- No applications are accepted for Summer admission
Documentation submission deadlines are the same as the application submission deadlines listed above.
Completed applications will continue to be accepted after the deadline date, but applicants who apply late may not have access to funding.
Students seeking appointments as research assistants or teaching assistants should complete their application with all necessary documentation, including letters of recommendation, by the application deadline to ensure consideration for their admittance in the desired semester.
