CERTIFICATE IN NANOSCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

As industries using nanotechnology continue to develop, particularly in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and North Texas region, The University of Texas at Dallas has an important role to play in educating our workforce. The Certificate in Nanoscience and Technology offered by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering provides a means for undergraduate students to familiarize themselves with the concepts and principles of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

APPLY FOR A CERTIFICATE IN NANOSCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The Certificate in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology is intended for current UT Dallas undergraduate students. If you are not currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, you must first submit an application to the undergraduate major program of interest.

To eligible to apply for the Certificate in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, you must:

  • Be a current UTD undergraduate student.
  • Be currently enrolled in or previously completed at least one Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Certificate core course.
  • Not be enrolled in the Minor in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Students are not permitted to use the same courses to satisfy both the Minor in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and the Certificate in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Both the Certificate and the Minor require the same two core courses, and therefore, a student cannot earn both. Students must choose whether they would like to pursue and receive the Certificate or the Minor.
  • Apply prior to the start of your expected undergraduate graduation term. Certificate programs must be approved, processed and added to a student’s record prior to the first day of class for the semester.

Applications for the Certificate in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are submitted through the UT Dallas Student Center in PeopleSoft. To apply, follow the application instructions provided on this guide. If you have questions regarding how the Certificate course requirements fit into your current undergraduate degree plan, please contact your undergraduate academic advisor.

REQUIREMENTS

The certificate requires completing 9 semester credit hours of study as detailed below.

Please note that, starting in Fall 2018, NANO-prefixed courses have been relabeled to MSEN-prefixed courses. The courses themselves have not changed, and either version will count towards the requirements listed below.

Core Requirements: 6 semester credit hours

MSEN 3301 Introduction to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

MSEN 3302 Microscopy, Spectroscopy and Nanotech Instrumentation

Elective Requirements: 3 semester credit hours

Students must complete at least one 3 semester credit hour course chosen from the following courses:MSEN 3310 Introduction to Materials Science

MSEN 4391 or EE 4391 Technology of Plasma

MSEN 4V95 Undergraduate Research in Nanotechnology

Or any upper division elective class which satisfies the Minor in Nanoscience and Technology
