1. Effects of transparent conducting electrodes and hole transport layers on the performance of MAPbI3 solar cells fabricated on PET substrates Bishal Bhandari, Justin C Bonner, Robert T Piper, Julia W P Hsu Flexible and Printed Electronics Volume 9 July 2024 Article number 035002. https://doi.org/10.1088/2058-8585/ad5d01

Publication Highlight: Advancements in Solar Cell Technology

A recent study by B. Bhandari, J. C. Bonner, R. T. Piper, and J. W. P. Hsu, titled “Effects of Transparent Conducting Electrodes and Hole Transport Layers on the Performance of MAPbI3 Solar Cells Fabricated on PET Substrates,” has been published in Flexible and Printed Electronics. This research explores how different transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) and hole transport layers (HTLs) impact the efficiency of perovskite solar cells made on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates.

The findings reveal that the choice of TCEs and HTLs significantly influences the performance of these solar cells, highlighting the importance of material interactions in optimizing solar technology. This work is a step forward in developing flexible solar cells that could lead to more efficient and versatile energy solutions.

The study presents Figure 1, which includes box plots illustrating key performance metrics: (a) Open Circuit Voltage (Voc), (b) Short Circuit Current Density (Jsc), (c) Fill Factor (FF) and (d) Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE). These metrics were analyzed for PSCs using different HTLs: Acidic PEDOT:PSS (gray), Dilute PEDOT:PSS (red), Neutral PEDOT:PSS (blue), and NiO nanoparticles (green) on various transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) including Glass/ITO, AG12, and Sigma. Additionally, the champion current-voltage (J-V) plots for each HTL configuration are shown in panels (e) through (g), providing a comprehensive view of their performance under reverse scan conditions.

A recent study by Seungbin Lee, YongChan Jung, Hye Ryeon Park, Jongmug Kang, Juntak Jeong, Yeseo Choi, Jin-Hyun Kim, Jaidah Mohan, Harrison Sejoon Kim, Jiyoung Kim, and Si Joon Kim, titled “Analysis of Ferroelectric Properties of ALD-Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 Thin Films According to Oxygen Sources,” has been published in Solid-State Electronics. This research investigates how different oxygen sources affect the ferroelectric properties of atomic layer deposited (ALD) Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 thin films.

The findings indicate that the choice of oxygen sources plays a crucial role in optimizing the performance of these thin films, which could have significant implications for the development of advanced electronic devices, particularly in memory and logic applications.

Understanding the Fabrication of HZO-based Capacitors

Figure 1(a) shows a detailed image of a capacitor made from HfZrO2 (HZO). Here’s how it was created, step by step:

1.Starting Layer: The process begins by growing a thin layer of silicon dioxide (SiO2) that is 300 nanometers thick on a silicon (Si) base. This layer acts as an insulator.

2.Bottom Electrode: Next, a layer of titanium nitride (TiN), which is 90 nanometers thick, is added on top of the SiO2. This is done using a technique called RF sputtering, which helps to evenly spread the material at room temperature.

3.HZO Thin Films: After that, a very thin layer of HZO (10 nanometers thick) is deposited. This layer is made up of hafnium (Hf) and zirconium (Zr) in equal parts. The deposition happens at a temperature of 250 °C, using different oxygen sources like ozone (O3), water (H2O), and heavy water (D2O) along with special chemicals for Hf and Zr.

4.Top Electrode: A second TiN layer is then added on top of the HZO, using the same method as the bottom electrode.

5.Annealing: All the layers (TiN/HZO/TiN) are then heated to 400 °C for 60 seconds in a nitrogen (N2) environment. This step, called rapid thermal annealing, helps improve the material properties.

6.Patterning the Capacitors: Finally, the capacitors are shaped using photolithography and wet etching techniques. This involves using a gold (Au) mask to create precise patterns with different sizes (radii of 25, 37.5, and 50 micrometers).

This process is essential for creating capacitors that can be used in various electronic devices, helping them perform better and more efficiently.
