Undergraduate

Student working in an NSERL Lab

Although the Jonsson School does not offer a bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering, undergraduates from other disciplines are encouraged to investigate opportunities to participate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering’s research activities or opt for either a minor or certificate in nanoscience and technology.

Students are also welcome to take the graduate-level Introduction to Materials Science course or a nanotechnology course. Please contact any of the listed faculty to discuss research opportunities within their areas of expertise.

What is the difference between a Minor and a Certificate?

The Minor provides a more in-depth study of nanoscience and technology. It is like a “mini-major” for which you take 18 semester credit hours (SCH), equivalent to 6 classes, with 3 SCH being research.

The Certificate is like a “mini-minor” for which you take 9 SCH, equivalent to 3 classes, and you gain a broad overview of nanoscience and technology rather than in-depth knowledge.

The Minor/Certificate is noted on your official transcript, and shows that you have added to the breadth of your knowledge in this important area, which can enhance your professional resume.

Students are not permitted to use the same courses to satisfy both the Minor in Nanoscience and Technology and the Certificate in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Both the Minor and the Certificate require the same two core courses, and therefore, a student cannot earn both. Students must choose whether they would like to pursue and receive the Minor or the Certificate.
