NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

ELECTRONIC MATERIALS EVALUATION RESEARCH FOR GREATER EXPOSURE TO FUTURE TECHNOLOGY CAREERS (EMERGE)

REU Fellows will have the opportunity to perform research in state-of-the-art laboratories with faculty mentors, visit local high-tech companies and plan for their careers.

We are now accepting applications to select Undergraduate Research Fellows for our Summer 2024 REU Site jointly held in the Departments of Materials Science & Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas.

  • Your top three (3) research choices based on the faculty projects listed

Benefits to you include:

Fellows will live on campus and receive a Fellowship of $6000 which includes a stipend for meals. In addition, a travel allowance is provided for Fellows originating from outside Dallas.

The overall objective is to establish an engaging exploration into the research methods for the evaluation and fundamental understanding of electronic materials and devices for use in energy, electronics, nanotechnology, and sensing/detecting. Participating Faculty Mentors and research labs are listed on the Projects page. Most research will be performed in the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Laboratory, which houses many state-of-the-art laboratories. Fellows will make use of on-site shared facilities, 10,000-square-foot clean room fully equipped for semiconductor device fabrication, a comprehensive suite of high-resolution microscopy and nano-characterization tools, and advanced electrical characterization facilities, as well as the extensive instrumentation and resources maintained by individual research groups.

The Program will conclude with an on-campus poster symposium at which Fellows will present the results of their work to the other summer research participants and the University community.

Program Duration

The Program will run from May 27, 2025 to August 2, 2025

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate institution
  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • Juniors / incoming seniors in a relevant area of engineering or science (physics, chemistry, materials science, mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering) will be given preference, although sophomores with strong academic records will also be considered.

However, you SHOULD NOT count yourself out from applying – even if you think your GPA is not competitive, you are not one of the majors listed but would enjoy this research, or think you haven’t taken enough “advanced” courses in your major, etc.
