Students Working with Intel Fall 2024
MSE graduates are making things that matter all over the country in major industries. Dr. Julia Hsu recently met up with several alumni who are making a difference at Intel. L-R they are Juan Pablo Oviedo Robles who was Dr. Moon Kim’s student, Dr. Julia Hsu, Robert Piper, who was Dr. Hsu’s student, Xinglu Wang, who was with Robert Wallace’s group, Marisol Valdez , a current Hsu student, Adi Mishra, from Dr. Jason Slinker’s group, Akash Laturia, a graduate from Dr. William Vandenberghe’s group. Everyone except Dr. Hsu and her current student work at Intel, just one of the many great companies hiring our highly qualified graduates.

2024 National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates

This is the third year of the E.M.E.R.G.E (Electronic Materials Evaluation Research for Greater Exposure to Future Technology Careers) REU. This year we had 10 students from all over the country travel to UT Dallas to perform research in our state-of-the-art facilities. In addition to their research work, they also took part in field trips to local tech companies like Texas Instruments, Zyvex Labs, and Qorvo and Coherent.
Four REU students won awards from the SPUR, Summer Platform for the Undergraduate Research, poster sessions, sponsored by the UT Dallas Honors College. Check out this link for more on the research done by our REU students: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/62NkC4GJodM
We are now accepting applications for Summer 2025 https://mse.utdallas.edu/connect/recruitment-and-outreach/reu-program/
Moroccan Summer 2024 Program
This summer, for the third year in a row UT Dallas Materials Science and Engineering hosted a group of students from Hassan II University in Casablanca, Morocco. These participants make up the top performing students at their university. Hundreds of students apply each year, only about 70 were selected to undergo rigorous testing to select the top 4 students. These students perform research with various MSE professors during their short weeks on campus. They also found time to explore North Texas and whet their appetite for all things Texan! Check out this YouTube video for more information on our Moroccan Summer Program:

Moroccan Student Connections
In Summer 2023 MSE welcomed 6 Moroccan researchers once again and once again we expect to welcome at least one of those students to our PhD program. All six of the Moroccan students have applied for Spring 2025, but Lamkadem Fatima Ezzahra was the first to complete her application. Fatima says she chose UTD to continue her education because during her time here she found the culture very welcoming and kind. She felt “at home” despite being thousands of miles away from family and friends. She says the research experience was remarkable, “The supportive environment made it easy to grasp new concepts quickly.Everyone was not only willing to help, but also eager to share their knowledge, which was immensely beneficial.” Fatima also liked the diversity she found in the department. She built friendships with people from Columbia, India, Panama, Egypt, and Korea. She says the most important thing was that the internship ignited her passion for research. Fatima has been admitted to the MSE program for Spring 2025.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) 2023:
This is our second year for the E.M.E.R.G.E (Electronic Materials Evaluation Research for Greater Exposure to Future Technology Careers) REU. This year we had 10 students from all over the country travel to UT Dallas to perform research in our state-of-the-art facilities. In addition to their research work, they took part in field trips to local tech companies like Texas Instruments Inc. and Zyvex Labs. They also explored and enjoyed some of the sights and sounds of the Lone Star State. They visited the Galleria, Dallas World Aquarium, Buc-ee’s and the Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco along with Magnolia Market at the Silos. Some students took a road trip to the state capital of Austin and San Antonio! This year, two of our students, Jessica Fink and Aman Rahman, won awards for their poster presentations at the end of the program. We are proud of the hard work our students put in this year!

Uzbekistan Student Internships Fall 2023
Our department is looking for ways to reach out to highly motivated extremely qualified students who can make a difference through engineering. This year we found five of those students in Uzbekistan. They are students at “New Uzbekistan University,” the first autonomous public university in Uzbekistan. These students participated in research activities in materials science for four weeks during September and October. During their stay, they were able to visit some local sites and participate in some true Texan experiences!
